Presented in conjunction with Capture Photography Festival, Field Studies investigates radical and inventive ways in which our everyday landscape might be experienced and mapped. Rebecca Bayer and Laura Kozak’s community-based project The Hadden Park Map Exchange (developed through the Vancouver Parks Board Field House Residencies) documents the coming together of a myriad of specialized practitioners and community members—visual artists, musicians, historians, gardeners, choreographers, archaeologists, meterologists, lifeguards, local residents and children—to produce a series of unconventional maps of Hadden Park, at the north end of Vancouver’s Kitsilano Beach. Emiliano Sepulveda probes the very basis of photography with his weather kites made of light-sensitive photo paper which record light conditions in the sites they are flown. Eden Veaudry’s sensual installation quite literally weaves together still photographs, video and tapestries to map the intimate surfaces of her domestic realm, à la Xavier de Maistre’s 1794 novel A Journey Round My Room.

Rebecca Bayer is a Vancouver-based artist and architectural designer. Her projects examine relationships between people, material, and atmospheric surroundings to promote the exchange of ideas and the sharing of experience. Bayer pursues these themes through public art projects, urban interventions, community collaborations, as well as public space research and teaching.

Laura Kozak is a designer and cartographer. Through an independent practice that spans graphic design, cartography, architecture and urban design, she has contributed to projects for 221A Artist Run Centre, AICAD, ASIR Studio, Emily Carr University, CityStudio, the Helen Pitt, and Spacing Vancouver. A core interest in collaborative design of the urban environment informs her research and teaching practice. Kozak holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture from UBC and a BFA from Emily Carr.

Emiliano Sepulveda is an immigrant visual artist of Mexican descent based in Vancouver. He is fascinated by how the world is encountered through perception, and his work is a constant practice of creating models for understanding and interacting with this world. This process-based practice incorporates simple actions such as walking or kite-flying as ritual practice and is heavily informed by photography. For Sepulveda photography also functions as an uncanny, magical, performative, and sculptural medium. He holds a BFA from Emily Carr University and is an MFA candidate at Simon Fraser University.

Eden Veaudry is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice incorporates textiles, video and sound. Recent exhibitions and performances include The Grain of the Voice at the Western Front (2014), Conference on the Wave at CSA Space (2014) and Joining the Periphery at VIVO Media Arts Centre (2012). She lives in Vancouver.
