 In Conversation: Brendan Fernandes on Eight Ounces Half a Pound

Access Gallery is committed to encouraging conversations that link artists of different generations to one another and to the wider community. In this event, the exhibiting artists of Eight Ounces Half a Pound -- Guadalupe Martinez, Katherine Soucie and Tommy Ting -- converse with visiting artist Brendan Fernandes about the ways in which issues of race, labour and the body inflect each of their practices. Currently based between Toronto and New York, Brendan Fernandes’ cultural background as a Kenyan-Indian-Canadian informs his sculpture and installation-based practice, where he explores issues of migration, the mutations of language and the notion of enacted identity. In his newest work Fernandes investigates movement, physicality and gender, in particular the ways that techniques are encoded and recalled in both labouring and dancing bodies via muscle memory and the lexicon of dance. Fernandes has exhibited internationally including exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, The National Gallery of Canada and The Third Guangzhou Triennial. Fernandes’ participation in this event is courtesy of the Contemporary Art Gallery, which is hosting him as part of their Studio Residency Program at the Burrard Marina Field House in summer 2014.
