In Conversation: Lyse Lemieux with Amélie Brisson-Darveau

Sat 10 Sep 2016 2PM

Access’ In Conversation series invites established artists and thinkers into dialogue with our exhibiting emergent practitioners, with the aim of creating conversations that that “thicken” our experience of exhibitions, and link artists of different generations to one another and to the wider community. Join Vancouver-based artist Lyse Lemieux as she converses with Amélie Brisson-Darveau about the affinities in their respective practices, particularly their concerns for garments and textiles, architectural space, and the body implied through form, line, or movement. Each artist, though differently, evokes similar a question: How does a body respond to the volumes, surfaces, and textures that enclose, surround, bind, or clothe it?

Lyse Lemieux is a Vancouver-based artist whose 30 year practice has explored the reaches of drawing. Since graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1976, she has exhibited her work extensively in public galleries, nationally and internationally. Delicately balanced between representation and abstraction, Lemieux’s works maintain a relationship to the human figure. References to the body, particularly the female body, often emerge through her use of found garments and felted wool, which she uses, in combination with ink. Lemieux is represented by Republic Gallery, Vancouver.

Amélie Brisson-Darveau received her MFA from Concordia University in the Fiber Art program. She completed a B.A. in Visual and Media Art at the Université du Québec à Montréal and received a second BA in Social Work from Université de Montréal. Brisson-Darveau is interested in activating the dynamics between architecture, composition of movements (from the body or materials) and time. Through her installations, performative actions and drawings, she makes these forces emerge and disappear through methods of layering, cutting, assembling, sequencing and synchronizing. Her work has been shown in various exhibitions and events in Canada, United-States, and Europe. She has received grants from FQRSC (Fonds de recherche sur la science et la culture) and the Canada Council for the Arts, and was the recipient of an Emerging Artist Award from the Kaunas Textile Biennale. She lives and works between Montreal and Zurich.
