Access Gallery is pleased to announce the launch of the exhibition catalogue Passage on Friday, January 14th from 6-8pm. Published in collaboration with artist Osvaldo Yero and guest curator Charo Neville, the catalogue features an introduction by Neville and an essay by Scott Watson.
Taking place from February 13-March 20, 2010, Passage was one of a series of cultural projects on view along the Carrall Street Greenway in the Downtown Eastside for Bright Light, a multi-venue temporary public art project commissioned by the City of Vancouver. Yero's work was visible from the street during the day through the window of Access at its previous location in Gastown. Peering through a revealed slot in the otherwise darkened window, the viewer experienced intense flashes of light, created by flickering LED lights which momentarily highlighted knife blades set against a black backdrop in a completely darkened room. Embedded in Yero’s experience as part of the growing Cuban diaspora, the brief beams of light on the spikes of metal suggested the reflection of light created from a lighthouse beacon, announcing a vast dark sea and the paradoxical freedom and panic that swimming in a wide dark ocean may induce.
The exhibition catalogue includes comprehensive documentation of Passage as well as past works. Watson’s essay contextualizes Yero’s recent project in relation to his overall practice.
Please join us on Friday, January 14th from 6-8pm for the debut launch of Passage. Following the launch will be the closing reception for our archive exhibition, Burrow, taking place at 8pm.
