About the position
The Curatorial Assistant is an important position at this small but vital artist-run centre, reporting directly to the Artistic Director and responsible for assisting with the development and execution of all ongoing artistic programming, as well as the development of their own curatorial project, be it in the form of an exhibition, publication, or an alternative format.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
of the Curatorial Assistant is to assist the Artistic Director with curatorial program development and administration (including exhibitions, publications, and other projects and events) and assist in the oversight of the gallery space. This includes but is not limited to:
- Developing familiarity with Access’ mandate and history of artist-run culture in Vancouver
- Developing a deep understanding of current exhibitions, so as to interact with gallery patrons and community members
- Preparing all communications and publicity material (press releases, social media, website updates)
- Facilitating and assisting with events, opening receptions, and fundraisers
- Assisting with the execution and management of artist contracts
- Assisting in the coordination of exhibition installation; assist installation when necessary
- Communicating and assisting with the resolution of any emerging operational/facilities concerns to the Artistic Director in a timely manner
- Working with the Artistic Director to develop an independent curatorial project
- Includes all of the above responsibilities, plus
- Research, studio visits, curatorial writing, and execution of said project.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
is at the early stages of their career (age is not a requirement), and has:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills;
- Excellent time management, ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Proven research skills;
- Considerable knowledge of contemporary art
- Self-directed, mature, resourceful work ethic;
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- Career aspirations within the cultural milieu
- Knowledge and technical expertise related to computer design work and image management, such as but not limited to Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite
- Flexible schedule: is adaptable, and able to work evenings or weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate degree in Visual Arts or a related discipline;
- Experience working or volunteering in a gallery context and/or with community initiatives;
- Some experience working within a budget and gallery installation is an asset;
- Non-profit administrative experience an asset;
- Familiarity with artist-run culture an asset.
