Access Gallery presents a new project by Vancouver-based artist Elizabeth Milton entitled Auditions. Access Gallery's artist-in-residence for the past two months, Milton transformed the Western Front Lux space into an audition studio where she invited professional and amateur actors, friends, a psychologist, and her mother to participate. Developed into a series of three videos, the project bases itself around a series of one to one interactions between artist and participant blurring interactions between acting auditions, job interviews, psychotherapy sessions, and celebrity confessionals. This new work explores the voyeuristic consumption of trial and critique. Influenced by the work of psychotherapist Fritz Perls, Milton develops comedic and psycho-analytic play through physical interaction, staging, props, and dialogue investigating questions of authentic subjectivity, identity construction and the boundaries between amateur and professional practice.
Elizabeth Milton is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver. Her performative artwork integrates video and photography into experiential processes of character play that explore self-representation. Elizabeth holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of British Columbia (2007) and a BFA in Visual Art from Simon Fraser University (2003). She currently instructs courses in Digital Media, Studio Art and Critical Studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Langara College and Simon Fraser University. She was a recipient of a Visual Art Development Award (VADA) from the Contemporary Art Gallery and Vancouver Foundation (2004). Her work has been exhibited throughout Canada and realized through residencies at Access Gallery and the Banff Centre for the Arts.
